Kshara - Karma is a kind of special medication described in Ayurveda texts. Leech therapy ( Jalaukavacharan ) is one of the extensively used procedure described in Rakta - Mokshan ( Bloodletting ), described as one of the five main Karmas of Panchkarma. The Leeches used are of non - poisonous variety and medical significance. These are used to reduce local swelling, pain, hardness in inflamed body parts; in various skin lesions and to remove clotted blood in post - surgical wounds and anastomotic sutures and in cosmetic surgery. It is a hassle - free procedure and does not cause any significant pain or infection in the bite wound. The wounds dry up within 2 days without any complications.
This Therapy is safe in small children as well as aged persons.
Leech therapy is done in confirmation with standard wound management principles and blood handling precautions.
We discard the Leech once used.
